Isaiah 9:

 

1.    Background –

a.     Israel ready to be destroyed – league with Syria against Judah to try to avoid the coming of Assyria.

b.    Ahaz had rejected the ‘sign’ offer – would now suffer the consequence of judgment.

1.    Assyria overflow ‘to the neck’ – not complete destruction but would leave Judah in a weakened, precarious situation.

c.     With the coming of Assyria Israel (north) would be gone –

 

Hope for the future -  Naphtali and Zebulun – Galilee … to be ‘in light’…

a.     They were the FIRST to be invaded / destroyed – to be the first to view the coming salvation. –

1.    Matt. 4:  -  Jesus’ move, preaching in Galilee –

2.    Light –

a.     Light of the world – John 8:12

b.    the true light – that lighteth every man – John 1:9

 

b.    Their burden to be taken away -   BUT HOW?

 

Unto us a child is born –

a.     The promise of the child –

1.    Eve’s seed – Gen. 3

2.    Abraham’s seed – Gen. 12, etc.

3.    David’s seed – 2 Sam. 7:

4.    Virgin of Isa. 7:14 –

 

Government upon HIS shoulders

a.     House of David / throne of David to ‘end’ –

1.    Amos - to build again the ‘tabernacle of David’ –

2.    Jeconiah – ‘write this man childless’ – no more ruling in Jerusalem…

 

b.    YET – another to sit on the throne of David .. vs. 7

1.    Government shall be upon HIS shoulder – HE shall RULE

2.    “Key of the house of David’ – Isa. 22:21-22 – Jesus, Rev. 3:7

 

c.     NO END of His government –

1.    Others – grow, expand, decay, destroyed --- but NOT THIS ONE..

2.    This an ETERNAL Kingdom and throne –

 

d.    This kingdom based upon JUSTICE and RIGHTEOUSNESS –

1.    The foundation of God’s throne – 

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;

Mercy and truth go before Your face.

2.    The foundation of Christ’s kingdom –

 


The Personal Character of this Coming King –

 

a.    Wonderful –

1.    A ‘wonder’ – a ‘marvel’ –

2.    So often in the NT, they were in awe, wondering, marveling at his teaching and miracles..

a.     Matt. 7:28; Matt. 1:18,  etc.

 

b.    Counselor

1.    It is HIS teaching that we are to follow – Mtt. 28:18

2.    It is in HIM that all the fullness of the treasures of wisdom reside, Col. 2:3 –

3.    It is ‘the mind of Christ’ that we are to have – Phil. 2:1ff

 

c.     Mighty God

1.    Not simply one through whom God worked powerful things – (such as apostles)

2.    But CALLED God himself –

a.     John 1:1;

b.    John 20:28     ‘my Lord and my God’ –

c.     Heb. 1:8    unto the SON He says, ‘thy throne OH GOD’ ….

d.    John 5 – making himself ‘equal with God’ –

e.     Col. 2:9 – in HIM dwelleth all the fullness of Godhead bodily -- 

e.     1 Tim. 3:16 - God manifest in the flesh …

 

d.    Eternal Father (father of eternities)

1.    NOT ‘the father’ – as per UPC,  for they are DIFFERENT in PERSONS –

2.    Hence, the ‘father’, the ‘source’ of eternities –

3.    Micah 5:2 -  goings are from everlasting to everlasting –

3.    NOT created, but the creator –

a.     Col. 1:16-17 all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

b.    John 1:3  --  all things created BY Him and FOR him –

c.     Heb. 1:2 – ‘’by whom also he made the worlds’….

 

e.    Prince of Peace

1.    Micah 5:5 – He (the Christ) is our PEACE – IN HIM we have peace –

2.    Eph. 2:17 – came and preached peace to them that were nigh and afar off…

3.    John 16:33--  in the world have tribulation, IN ME have peace, not as world gives –

4.    In HIM – all the world united into one brotherhood – one body –

5.    In HIM we can be united with GOD – thus making PEACE between God and man.

 

Conclusion:

1.    Provisions for our salvation and restoration to God have been provided

2.    Our Great King invites us to serve him –

3.    Will you not submit unto HIS will?  Put your TRUST in Him?
