INTRODUCTION
1. OT to 'bring us to Christ' - Gal. 3:
a. by showing our NEED - sin & forgiveness
b. by showing our NEED - a spiritual leader -
1. kings of OT - failed miserably, hence the rejection of Coniah, 22:24f…
2. 'elders' (shepherds) -- failed
c. by giving PROPHETICAL message of the coming 'anointed one' -- the Messiah.
2. Jeremiah - during the end of the kingdom period.
a. begun by Saul, then to David and his seed …
b. David's seed - 'if they sin' -- punished as per law (destroyed from land)
c. Last rightful Davidic king -
1. returned 70 years later -- but NO king….
2. rebuilt temple, reinstituted priesthood & sacrifice -- but NO KING…

A. THE ORIGIN OF THE MESSIAH - 5
1. The appearance is the result of DIVINE Action -- I WILL RAISE UP -
2. Ruler from royal line of David (cf. 2 Sam. 7) --
3. A ruler in RIGHTEOUSNESS --
B. THE REIGN OF THE MESSIAH - 5b - 6a
1. Will reign as KING (a 2nd David) -- have a kingdom, scepter, subjects…
2. Will reign successfully -- i.e., will prosper (not like Coniah!)
a. compare with Coniah - 22:30
3. His reign charactered by justice and righteousness --
4. Will unite Judah and Israel -
a. divided kingdom following Solomon,
b. to be 'ONE' fold with ONE shepherd and ONE king…
5. This king will bring SALVATION --
6. This king will bring SECURITY to his people --
7. This will be the TRUE shepherd with other shpeherds UNDER him…
C. His NAME - Jehovah our righteousness….

A. BACKGROUND
1. 588 BC, Jeremiah imprisoned and abused because of the coming invasion.
2. Had been predicting the Captivity since he started preaching -- and they had seen it
a. begun in days of Josiah (640-608) - Jer. 1:1…
b. Captivity -- 606, 597,
3. Chapter 30 -- a promise of restoration, but first tremendous trouble.
a. NOT speaking of TODAY -- but of the coming Babylonian ruin and deportation
b. After Babylon - never destroyed in like manner -- though often persecuted..
c. RETURN -- was from BABYLON -
1. PreM… deported, returned, Messiah, destroyed & scattered, return 1948???
B. A Davidic King -- vs. 9
1. a liberator (contrast vs. 8 - 9)
2. Raised up by God…
3. Linked to service to God -- they would serve God BY serving THIS king.
4. Loyal subjects -- the service of delibeate choice
C. A Glorious King -- 21a
1. 'glorious' -- 'addir
a. used twice as a proper name for God by Isaiah -- 10:34; 33:21
b. used twice as an adjective descriptive of God, Ps. 76:4; 93:4
c. used twice as an adjective to describe the NAME of God, Ps. 8:1, 9
d. Though used 9 times in OT in singular form, NEVER of man
2. A Jew --
3. From 'the midst' --
4. A RULER -- not a figure head.
D. A Priestly King -- 21b
1. His service to God was empowered by God
2. Was personal -- HE shall approach God
3. His servace was successful -- allowed to approach God.
FULFILLED IN JESUS
1. Time of kingdom fulfilled -- Mark 1:14-15;
2. Jesus the promised king -- Luke 1:30-32
a. RAISED UP -- of resurrection, Acts 2:29-36
b. Christians = translated INTO the kingdom of God's dear son, Col. 1:13
c. WE a 'kingdom of priests' -- Rev. 1:6, 9
3. Jesus - the PRIESTLY King -
a. OT - priests from Levi, Kings from Judah -
b. changing of LAW - Heb. 7:12-14.
c. NOW - both united into ONE -- Heb. 8:1-4,
4. Jesus the RIGHTEOUS King -- Heb. 7:1f --
a. after order of Melchizedek -- 'king of righteousness'
