BRING UP CHILDREN

The following lesson is from the book of Proverbs and is an organized presentation of its teaching on children.

1. Parents -

a. Train them - Proverbs 22:6

6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

b. Discipline Them - 13:24, 19:18; 23:13-14; 29:15, 17

Proverbs 13:24 - 24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Proverbs 19:18 - 18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

Proverbs 23:13-14 - 13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. 14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Proverbs 29:15 - 15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

Proverbs 29:17 - 17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

c. Leave an Inheritance - 13:22

Proverbs 13:22 - 22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

d. HENCE - honored by children, 29:3

Proverbs 29:3 - 3 Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.

2. Wise Children -

a. Make parents happy - 10:1, 15:20; 27:11

Proverbs 10:1 - 1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Proverbs 15:20 - 20 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

Proverbs 27:11 - 11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.

b. Obey their parents - 15:5; 19;27; 23:15-16; 23:24-26

Proverbs 15:5 - 5 A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

Proverbs 19:27 - 27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

Proverbs 23:15-16 - 15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. 16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

Proverbs 23:24-26 - 24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. 25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice. 26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

3. Foolish Children -

a. dishonor parents - 17:25; 30:11

Proverbs 17:25 - 25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

Proverbs 30:11 - 11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

b. Bring sorrow - 17:21; 19:13; 19:26; 28:7

Proverbs 17:21 - 21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.

Proverbs 19:13 - 13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

Proverbs 19:26 - 26 He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

Proverbs 28:7 - 7 Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.

c. defraud parents - 28:24

Proverbs 28:24 - 24 Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.

d. deserve punishment - 20:20; 30:17

Proverbs 20:20 - 20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

Proverbs 30:17 - 17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

e. deserve servitude - 17:2

Proverbs 17:2 - 2 A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

4. Training

a. requires INSTRUCTION - 4:1-4

1. instruction in GODLINESS - 9:10

Proverbs 9:10 - 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

2. Warning against dangers - 1:10-19

3. Against unlawful love - 2:16-19

4. Against unwise suretyship - 6:1-5

5. Against laziness - 6:6-11

b. Requires Correction -

1. 29:17

Proverbs 29:17 - 17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

2. Children NEED to be corrected - 22:15; 29:15

Proverbs 22:15 - 15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Proverbs 29:15 - 15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

3. Must be PROPER correction

a. in LOVE - 3:11-12 -

Proverbs 3:11-12 - 11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: 12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

b. with purpose - 23:13-14

Proverbs 23:13-14 - 13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. 14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

c. Requires CHASTENING

1. 19:18; 13:24

Proverbs 19:18 - 18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

Proverbs 13:24 - 24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

2. Such is NOT for the righteous - 17:26

Proverbs 17:26 - 26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

3. IS needed for some - 10:13; 19:29; 26:3; 29:19

Proverbs 10:13 - 13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

Proverbs 19:29 - 29 Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

Proverbs 26:3 - 3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

Proverbs 29:19 - 19 A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.

4. Should inflict pain - 20:30

Proverbs 20:30 - 30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

5. Harsh in SOME cases - 15:10

Proverbs 15:10 - 10 Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.

6. Serves as a deterrent - 19:25

Proverbs 19:25 - 25 Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

d. Has rewards -

1. 'rest' - 22:6

Proverbs 22:6 - 6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

2. happiness - 15:20; 23:24--25.

Proverbs 15:20 - 20 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.
