Things that NEED to be proven:
1.That sin CAN be inherited (the GUILT of sin, not the consequences!)
2.That we DO inherit the GUILT of Adam's sin.
3.That sin is not only 'transgression of law" - but simply our NATURE.
1.Genesis 6:5
a.Earth was corrupt, "for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth: (Gen. 6:12).
b.Note, thoughts of his heart" -- do infants THINK? if so, only EVIL?
c.Which one of the points have been proven? NONE
2.Job 15:14-16
a.Note: who was the speaker - Eliphaz the Temanite! Was he inspired? Job called these "vain words" - Job. 16:2.
b.If the above WERE God's truth, Jesus was also "born of woman" - Gal. 4:4. We then also depraved....
3.Psalm 51:5 - 'born in sin'
a.Jesus was born in a stable and laid in a manger, but He was not a colt!
b.Acts 2: 8 - people were 'born in a tongue' - that is, where that language prevailed.
c.born in sin = where sin has prevailed.
d.Notice - this not prove any one of the three things needed.
4.Psalms 58:3
a."from the womb' - NOT IN the womb.
b.go astray - not BORN that way
c.speaking lies - 'infant' from latin meaning 'little non-speaker' -
d.NOTICE context: is only about the wicked (verse 3) and those that WORK wickedness (verse 2). This not speaking about the condition of babies at birth! It says nothing about Adam, Adamic sin, or hereditary sin.
5.Jeremiah 13:23 -
a.This is not speaking of Adam, or Adam's sin, but of those people who are ACCUSTOMED to do evil. Footnote for "accustomed" = taught in KJV and ASV.
b.This not speaking of one is born - sinner or otherwise.
c.Note how Israel got in this condition - vs. 10, 11. 25
d.These were the 'people of God' !! It was Israel who had been 'chosen' and 'elect' - but they had corrupted their ways.
6.Jeremiah 17:9 - wicked heart.
a.WHO's HEART??? vs. 5 - those whose heart had DEPARTED from the Lord.
b.These people had made their heart his way (17:23) - not BORN in that condition - not inherited such from Adam.
c.Responsibility of our hearts is OURS - Prov. 4:23.
7.Isaiah 1:5-6 - no soundness
a.This of Judah and Jerusalem, vs. 1 - not ALL MANKIND.
b.Not speaking of individual - but of the NATION of Israel.
c.Note what they were doing -- 2,3,4 - they were SINNING.
8.Romans 3:10-18 - all HAVE sinned.
a.Again, they have GONE out of the way - NOT born that way.
b.This describes their PRESENT condition - not from heredity but practice.
9.Romans 5:12
a.Finally - a passage that mentions Adam, Sin, and the world!
b.It does NOT teach that sin entered MAN - but the world, or "kosmos"
c.It does NOT teach that sin passed to all men - but that DEATH did.
d.It says that death passed to all FOR ALL HAVE SINNED.
e.The passage is speaking of the CONSEQUENCE of Adam's sin, i.e., that he was the first to sin - hence sin made an entrance. BUT HE WAS NOT THE LAST.....
10.Eph. 2:1-3
a.Note the footnote - in YOUR sins where you WALKED....
b.This is personal - not hereditary!
c.This is ACTION - not inclination.
1.Nature = "a mode of feeling and acting which by long habit has become nature" - Thayer.
2."Even as others" - but how did "others" get that way? By hardening their hearts, by giving themselves over to sin (Eph. 4:17-19; 2 Peter 2:14).
11.Prov. 21:4 - the plowing of the wicked is sin?
a.Ben Bogart affirmed that everything one does is sin, because he is totally depraved, and wholly inclined towards evil. This passage was 'used' to 'prove' that even 'work' is a sin before one is regenerated.
b.Not talking about infants, nor even necessarily those who are 'unregenerated' --
c.How become wicked?? 21:7 - through robbery (infants doing this??) - 17:23 - by taking out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment, YOU BECOME WICKED BY DOING WICKED DEEDS!
d.Compare Job 4:8; the 'plowing' here is not literal.
