Who Opposed Instruments?
It is NOT well known today that the use of instrumental music in worship is not only something relatively NEW but only came to use after MUCH opposition and fighting. Note:
Pope's chapel still does not have an instrument in it.
Greek orthodox church has NEVER allowed instruments in worship.
Russian churches do not permit them.
In England, following the reformation, only ONE instrument left in churches.
Anglicans - banned them in the 1640's.
- John Knox - opposed them.
- 1800's - they were fought over in American churches -
- Peter Cartwright (circuit rider) said they were not used in his churches...
- Wesley, "... no objection to instruments of music in our chapels provided they are neither seen nor heard."
- 1827, divided over introducing them, started the Protestant Methodist church.
- Fuller in England opposed them.
- Primitive Baptists still oppose them.
Mennonites - don't use them.
Quakers - don't use them.
church of Brethren - don't use them.
churches of Christ will not use them.
