Spirit of man
MAN MADE OF AT LEAST TWO PARTS - BODY AND SPIRIT
Eccl. 12:7 - body / spirit
Psalm 90:10 - something flies away at death. Not the body, therefore "we" = the spirit.
Job 4:18-21, dwell in houses of clay (body). House is always destinct from 'dweller' - we are destinct from our bodies.
Gen. 35:18 - her soul was departing ... for she died.
1 Kings 17:17-24, soul of child came into him again.
1 Sam. 28:19
- Saul to be gathered with dead TOMORROW
- Not BURIED - but bodies remained visible - 1 Sam. 31:12-13
- HENCE - SAUL (SPIRIT) GATHERED TO HIS PEOPLE, NOT THE BODY.
Number 27:12-13
- Moses 'gathered unto they people"
- NOT the grave, for buried far from them, Deut. 34:5
- THUS gathered in 'sheol' - place of spirits.
Luke 20:37-38 - syllogism based upon this statement:
- God IS the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob
- God is NOT the God of the dead.
- THEREFORE - Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob LIVING though dead physically.
Luke 23:42-43 - the thief on the cross
- Would be WITH Jesus THAT DAY.
- What type of a promise is it that they both would die that day???? That they would both be in the grave that day? NO - it was a promise that when they DIED they (their spirits) would be together in paradise.
2 Cor. 4:16-18
- Inward verses outward man.
- Inward = same as spirit, outward = the body.
- Compare with Romans 7:22 - inward vs. outward (members of body)
1. Things NOT seen are eternal.
2. Inward man is NOT SEEN.
3. Therefore, it is the INWARD man that is eternal.
2 Cor. 5:6-8
- Two possibilities for our existence:
1. PRESENT with the BODY and ABSENT from the LORD
2. ABSENT from the BODY and PRESENT with the LORD
- WHEN is this possible - to be 'absent from body and present with Lord?"
1. NOT before death - are then IN THE BODY and absent from LORD
2. NOT after resurrection - are then IN THE BODY AND PRESENT WITH LORD.
3. Only leaves - when DEAD and yet before the resurrection.
2 Cor. 12:2 - two states of existence:
Phil. 1:21-23
1. It is better to depart (not live in flesh) and be with the Lord.
2. To REMAIN IN THE FLESH more needful - hence a contrast is seen between:
- departing FROM the flesh & being with the Lord.
2 Peter 1:13-15 - the tabernacle and 'I in it"
- 2 things mentioned here - the body and "I"
- The dwelling and the dweller are separate things.
- NOTE: decease = "exodus" (greek), lit. a going out. That is what the SPIRIT does, but the SPIRIT is the "I" that is so 'departing'.
2 Peter 2:9
- reserved UNDER PUNISHMENT
1. kolazomenous = present tense,
2. to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, NASV, ASV -
3. YES, they not only EXIST - but are being PUNISHED.
- She died ....while she was with them... turning to the body....
- SHE was NOT THE BODY - the body was there, SHE had DEPARTED!
Luke 16:19-24 - Either real or a parable.
- If history - proof of existence after death.
- If a parable, is then based upon REALITY (all parables ARE)
1. Rich men - they exist.
3. Brothers - they exist.
4. Moses writings - they exist
6. Abraham's bosom, punishment, gulf - the two would then exist.
- This is NOT an allegory. Try substituting the various 'allegorical definitions' into the story and see what nonsense comes out!
NOTE: Abraham's bosom = Josephus states: "with whom, there is no place of toil; no burning heat, no piercing cold, nor are there any briars there; but the countenance of the fathers and of the just, which they see always smile upon them while they wait for the rest, and eternal new life in heaven, which is to succeed this region. THIS PLACE WE CALL THE BOSOM OF ABRAHAM. (spoken about the relation to the felicitous abode of the righteous souls after death.
Revelation 6:9-11
- Here we see the 'souls' of 'the dead' under the 'altar' - they were 'alive' and knew it!
